New Ophidian Ffion: a touch of class
27 May 2025
Every now and again a new loudspeaker comes along that just makes you want to listen more and more. Ophidian Ffion is one such speaker. Since these floorstanders arrived at Adventures last month, we have barely had them out of our dem room. They are that good.
Ophidian is the brainchild and lifelong ambition of designer Gareth James, who founded the company in 2011 to create exceptional high end audio speakers. And Gareth is very good at that. Ophidian is not (yet) a particularly well known brand; it is a small company and all speakers are designed and hand-built here in the UK. But it consistently produces excellent products, and in Ffion has engineered a speaker of superb quality.
Named after Gareth’s new-born daughter, Ffion has a beautifully tapered cabinet which combines the excellent stereo imaging of a compact speaker with sufficient internal volume to deliver deep and controlled low frequencies via an 8″ bass drive unit and Ophidian’s trademark AEROFLEX bass technology.
Further up, Ffion features a 125mm mid-bass driver with aluminium cone and solid alloy phase plug and a motor system with twin shorting paths for very low distortion. The performance of the critical mid-band is further enhanced by mounting the upper drivers within their own enclosure – completely isolated from the bass system. A 22mm Sonomex soft dome tweeter, with a wide roll surround to enhance dispersion, provides smooth and detailed high frequencies that are just a pleasure to listen to.
Ffions stand just over a metre tall, are available in Walnut real wood veneer (our demo pair), White, or any RAL colour of your choice, created using a 16 layer painting process. RRP is £8,500.

We don’t normally pay much credence to Hi-fi reviews, but will make an exception here as we think Kevin Fiske from The Ear sums it up perfectly:
“…the Ffions create a sonic image like very few alternatives, with a depth, width and solidity that can be described in no other terms than simply mesmerising”
